Defining / Domains / Domain Acquisition
From impossible
to acquired.
We get the deal done.
The domain you want may already be owned. It may not be listed for sale. The owner may be difficult to identify, difficult to reach, or simply unwilling to engage.
That’s where we come in.
Defining provides private domain acquisition services for companies, founders, investors, and organizations seeking to acquire premium and ultra-premium domain names. From valuation and owner research through confidential outreach, negotiation, escrow, and transfer, we represent your interests through every stage of the acquisition.
Private Domain Acquisitions
Buying the domain is one thing. Buying it well is another.
Approaching a domain owner directly can reveal who wants the asset—and potentially what it may be worth to them.
We serve as your confidential buyer-side domain broker, bringing decades of market knowledge, valuation expertise, negotiation experience, and trusted industry relationships to the transaction.
Our job is simple: acquire the domain you want on the best terms we can negotiate, while protecting your identity and leverage throughout the process.
Confidential Buyer Representation
We approach owners on your behalf, allowing you to remain anonymous while negotiations are underway.
Ownership Research & Outreach
We identify and research the current owner, determine the best path of approach, and initiate a professional dialogue—even when a domain is not publicly listed for sale.
Valuation & Acquisition Strategy
We assess the domain as both a stand-alone asset and a strategic acquisition, drawing on comparable sales, market intelligence, scarcity, commercial utility, and other relevant valuation factors.
Expert Negotiation
We negotiate price, terms, timing, and deal structure on your behalf, informed by decades of experience in the premium domain market.
Transaction & Transfer Management
Once terms are agreed, we coordinate the transaction through a trusted third-party escrow provider and oversee the process through secure transfer of the domain.
How it works
Strategically. Confidentially. Start to finish.
Strategy & Valuation
You tell us the domain you want and what we need to know about the acquisition. We research the asset, assess its likely market value, review relevant comparable sales, and establish an acquisition strategy before contact is made.
Owner Research & Private Outreach
We identify the owner and make contact on your behalf without disclosing your identity. Because the way an owner is approached can shape everything that follows, every outreach is deliberate and tailored to the circumstances.
Negotiation & Deal Structure
We lead the negotiation—working to secure the domain at the best achievable price and terms while maintaining your confidentiality and negotiating leverage.
Escrow, Transfer & Closing
Once an agreement is reached, we coordinate escrow and domain transfer, working with both parties through closing to ensure a secure and efficient transaction.
Who we represent
For companies that know exactly what they want.
We represent founders, CEOs, investors, private equity and venture-backed companies, corporate marketing and brand teams, and organizations pursuing strategically important domain acquisitions.
Some clients are acquiring the exact-match .COM for an established company. Others are preparing for a launch, rebrand, transaction, or new category. Some are pursuing an asset that has been privately held for decades and has never been offered for sale.
Whatever the circumstances, the mandate is the same:
Find the owner. Establish the opportunity. Protect the buyer. Get the deal done.
Get started
The name you want is rarely for sale. Until we ask.
Quiet outreach, disciplined negotiation, and your identity protected until the deal closes.
What clients say
“Consider yourself lottery-level lucky if you have the opportunity to work with Defining.com.”

Domain Acquisition FAQ
Asked, answered.
Can you acquire a domain that isn't listed for sale?
Yes. In fact, many of the premium domains we pursue are privately held and have never been publicly offered for sale. We research ownership, determine the appropriate means of contact, and approach the owner privately on your behalf.
Will the domain owner know who I am?
Not unless and until disclosure becomes necessary or you authorize it. Confidential representation is central to our acquisition process and can be particularly important when the buyer is a well-known company, funded startup, investor, or other party whose identity could influence the seller's expectations.
How do you determine what a domain is worth?
We consider comparable domain sales, scarcity, length and memorability, keyword and category strength, commercial utility, brandability, market demand, likely end-user demand, and the strategic circumstances surrounding the acquisition. Premium domain valuation requires judgment and context; it cannot be reduced to an automated appraisal alone.
How long does a domain acquisition take?
It depends entirely on the asset and owner. Some acquisitions move quickly. Others require sustained outreach and negotiation over time. We remain engaged throughout the process and keep you informed as the opportunity develops.
What if I need help deciding which domain or brand name to pursue?
That is where our DomainFirst™ Naming practice comes in. If the name itself has not yet been determined, we can develop the naming strategy and identify strong, ownable brand names before beginning an acquisition.
How is the transaction completed?
Once price and terms have been agreed, transactions are typically completed through a trusted third-party escrow provider. We coordinate the closing and transfer process from agreement through delivery of the domain into the buyer's control.
